Tagetes patula 'Spanish Brocade' French Marigold 'Spanish Brocade'

Bushy mounds of ruffled fully-double flowers in rich mahogany-red, each petal edged with contrasting golden yellow — the intricately patterned appearance of expensive woven fabric, the brocade of the name. 'Spanish Brocade' is simultaneously one of the most ornamentally beautiful and practically useful plants any UK gardener can grow.

This French Marigold is genuinely two plants in one: spectacular ornamental display and serious organic pest-management workhorse. The flowers are large ruffled fully-double heads in deep mahogany-red, every petal edged with contrasting golden yellow — the swirling skirt of a flamenco dancer, or the patterned brocade fabric the variety is named for. The bushy compact habit (25–35cm) is naturally weather-resistant — French Marigolds recover quickly from heavy UK summer rain without becoming soggy or flattened. The flowering period is continuous from June until first frosts. The germination is rapid (5–7 days), making it one of the easiest plants for beginner gardeners to succeed with from seed.

But the practical dimension elevates 'Spanish Brocade' beyond most ornamentals. The roots secrete alpha-terthienyl — a compound with scientifically confirmed toxicity to soil-borne root-knot nematodes that damage tomato and pepper root systems. In parallel, the pungent foliage releases volatile compounds that mask the chemical signals vegetable crops use to attract aphids and whitefly. Growing 'Spanish Brocade' around vegetable crops provides a living flowering pest deterrent throughout the entire growing season. This is one of the most vital tools for the chemical-free organic gardener. Half-hardy annual.

A note on growing

'Spanish Brocade' is genuinely one of the easiest seeds in the catalogue. Sow indoors February–April at 18–20°C. Surface-sow with a fine covering of vermiculite. Germination 5–7 days. Prick out into individual 9cm pots when seedlings have 2–3 true leaves. Plant out after all frost risk (late May or June). Space 25–30cm apart. Full sun, well-drained soil. The golden rule for French Marigolds is consistent deadheading — pinch off spent flower heads immediately behind the faded head to the first set of healthy leaves below. This prevents seed formation (which signals the plant to reduce flower production) and redirects energy into fresh bud development. With regular deadheading, 'Spanish Brocade' remains a solid mound of red and gold from June until the first November frosts.

At end of season: dig the roots into the soil in autumn. The alpha-terthienyl compounds released as the roots break down provide ongoing nematode suppression in the following season's vegetable beds.

Where it shines

In the kitchen garden as the ultimate organic companion plant — plant a ring of Marigolds around the base of tomato plants where the pungent scent masks the aroma confusing whiteflies and aphids, while the roots keep the soil healthy and nematode-free. In containers and patio pots, where the compact habit and continuous flowering provide reliable summer colour. In cottage borders for warm fiery colour from June to November. In children's gardens where the rapid germination, easy growing and bright colour build gardening confidence. As cut flowers for cheerful summer posies — the warm tones add brightness to any informal arrangement.

Plant alongside

The classic kitchen-garden companion: plant 'Spanish Brocade' around tomato plants for biological pest protection — masking whitefly and aphid signals while preventing nematode build-up. For decorative high-contrast displays, pair with the deep navy-blue of Lobelia 'Crystal Palace' (if stocked). For warm sunset cottage borders, combine with Calendula 'Touch of Red' and Cosmos 'Apricotta'.
